Shadow Divers

Shadow Divers:  The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II, by Robert Kurson, is the true story of how deep-sea wreck divers discovered a World War II German U-boat off the shore of New Jersey and solved the mystery of how it got there.

I was blown away by the back stories of the divers, especially the lead diver - John Chatterton, who volunteered to serve as a medic during the Viet Nam war so he could experience for himself if the war was justified or not. John Chatterton's philosophy on life, his commitment to excellence, and mantra to get a thing done "no matter what" echo the moral responsibility exhibited by fictional character Harry Potter.  Only, this guy is REAL.

Did you know that U-boats regularly patrolled the waters off the east coast of America?  That they blew up 600 American ships during the early part of World War II?  That if it weren't for US technological advances during the war, we might now be ruled by Germany??  If you're looking for a fascinating non-fiction book that reads more like fiction, this is the book for you.  Now available in our school library.
